Ellie 9.4: Version Control 2.0, Leveled Up

Release
Alina Smahliuk
Software Engineer
Abstract:

With Ellie 9.4, we’re taking the next step toward making your data modeling workflow fully production-ready.

This release expands and improves our Version Control System (VCS) integrations—so you can move from model → code → repository without leaving Ellie.

No more downloads. No more manual uploads. No more broken workflows.

Just generate, commit, and push.

What’s new in 9.4

Ellie now supports three major Git-based platforms:

  • GitHub
  • GitLab
  • Azure DevOps Git (ADO)

Building on our existing Azure DevOps integration, we expand support to GitHub and GitLab and remove previous limitations—bringing all three systems to a more consistent level of functionality.

The goal is simple:
👉 End-to-end repository workflows directly from Ellie

From model to repository — in one flow

You can now take a model and push it straight into your repository in just a few steps:

That’s it. Your files are now version-controlled and ready for your team.

Built for real-world workflows

This isn’t just a “connect and upload” feature. Ellie now understands your repositories.

Browse before you push

  • View repositories and projects
  • Explore branches
  • Navigate folder structures

You always know exactly where your files will land.

Smart branch handling

  • Default branches can be preconfigured
  • Protected branches are detected automatically
  • Warnings prevent accidental writes where they’re not allowed

Reusable connections

Admins can create organization-level connections that:

  • Work across all models
  • Preselect default repositories and branches
  • Standardize workflows across teams

Platform support

Ellie 9.4 supports modern, secure authentication across all systems:

  • GitHub → GitHub App (Cloud + Enterprise)
  • GitLab → OAuth (Cloud) or Access Tokens (Cloud & Self-managed)
  • Azure DevOps → Azure AD App / Service Principal

All integrations are designed for secure, scalable enterprise use.

What this unlocks

This release brings Ellie closer to how modern data teams actually work:

  • Treat generated SQL and dbt files as first-class code artifacts
  • Integrate directly into existing Git workflows
  • Enable collaboration through standard PR/MR processes
  • Keep modeling and engineering tightly connected

Why this matters

Ellie has always focused on making data modeling intuitive.

With 9.4, we’re extending that philosophy to deployment and collaboration.

Because modeling doesn’t end when the diagram is done.
It ends when the code is shipped.
